Sometimes I feel the art of photography is taken for granted. There are so many people with digital camera's nowa-days, and the word "photographer" is over-used. Many people who have the ability to take good pictures will soon call themselves professional photographers.

Photographer - noun
a person who takes photographs, esp. one who practices photography professionally.

So the word can be used loosely to describe anyone who takes photographs. Many of our wedding and portrait clients would agree that we set ourselves apart. We do this by controlling the viewable quality that is perceived as coming from our photography studio. A lot of times we'll release photographs on social media sites such as Facebook. This allows our images to be seen by thousands of people within minutes. It's also nice to see comments and feedback on your services to assure you that you're still doing an amazing job. Other clients can tag the images or albums and recommend you to their friends. In my opinion, it is the most economical and efficient way of advertising in the 21st century.

We love children's photography because we love capturing a young life that is blossoming right in front of you. Children's portraits are a challenge because they're so rambunctious, and always moving. We like to take the lifestyle approach to photographing children in their every day environment. Show who they are, and what they were like at this certain age.

Wedding photography is our love - capturing the emotion and details that go into each wedding day is truly an honor. Every wedding is a part of history. It cannot be redone; it's not easily rescheduled. It is what it is, and that is something special! Having the ability to capture love as it is is such a powerful thing. Telling a story that can be relived for years to come is an art, not something your friend or uncle can do with a nice camera. The process is long, and the hours spent behind a camera and computer are many. This is your day for bridal photography. Don't take a chance - hire a professional wedding photographer.

Senior Pictures are what we love the most. We are commissioned to create amazing senior portraits that define our subjects. The expression, the dimples, and sometimes attitude, that defines who this young adult is. Our clients are typically looking for something different when they come to our studio. We invest a lot of time and money in making sure we offer something different to our senior clients.

The effort put into the capture of each image, and the work put in after the image is captured is what makes a professional photographer. Know the difference when hiring someone to capture a piece of family history.

In order to succeed as a small business person you have to wear many hats. The owner, Manager, Supervisor, Accountant, Marketing, Sales, Photography, Designer, esc... The list can go on forever. Dane Sanders said "How many different hats can we wear as business owners?"

If you think someone else can do a job more efficiently, then sell that hat! This will allow you to spend more time in the hat that makes you money!

I've always been a believer in buying the latest and greatest equipment. Why? Because our customers can see the difference, and they make comments on the key part(s) of the image which were made possible by the upgraded equipment. If we can do this at every shoot, then we know we're doing the right thing. We can't just buy equipment because it's new, or because we saw some pictures on the internet.

You have to know how to utilize the features and functionality of the equipment in order to get the return on your investment. If you can't utilize all the new and differentiating features of this equipment then it's a waste of money. End result - Know your equipment!

At Huffaker Photography, I feel that we do an AMAZING job of utilizing the newest technologies to help set us apart. Christie and I have different levels, and areas, of knowledge. Fortunately they all come together very well. Photography is an art, Business is business. You can't let either one get in the way, and if you do, one will suffer. This is when you know it's time to stop wearing the crippling hat, and sell it!

Because photographers are wearing so many hats, you have to know when to take one off, and put another one on. Are you buying a new camera because the creative side of you wants to, or because it's a smart business investment? Will you track your return on this investment by running reports on your images. In Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, you can easily see what images were shot with what camera, or lens. This can show you what your clients are buying the most of. There is a large amount of information in Lightroom that can help you earn more money when you're behind the lens. When it's time to put on the Sales hat, show more of what your clients are buying, not what the photographer likes the most...

It's a different mind set, but I think if you challenge yourself to know what hat you're wearing and when to wear each hat, you will come out ahead.

We believe in making changes, constantly! Why? If we make changes to better ourselves, our business, and our service then we will only get better. Coming from a background in technology I am constantly watching the market and learning about what's out there to make us better, or separate us from the other studios.

After discussing some things with Scott Hayne of Scott Hayne Photography I realized how different we could be if we invested in the new radiopoppers system. Christie and I discussed the investment in this technology and decided that it would be worth it. It would change not only our style, but it would also increase our efficiency during Weddings. It's just another tool in the bag baby!

The Result? Our clients LOVE the detail and blue skies in their images. We've had this capability for some time, using Nikon's CLS (Creative Lighting System), but radiopoppers takes this feature to a new level!

Stay tuned for for some images create with the new radiopoppers technology! If you'd like to view some images where we first used CLS, go here.

We prefer to let our images and quality of work talk the talk. You may wonder why you've never heard of us. We choose not to send 1000's of postcards to seniors because it's a waste. 9 out of 10 decisions are made by Word of Mouth recommendations from other peers. Why increase the carbon footprint, clog the landfills, and your counter tops with another postcard. That does nothing to set us apart... Main reason Seniors and their parents choose out studio: They want something DIFFERENT!

Everything we do is custom, from graduations invitations, to album design. We do everything by hand and let the 'other' studio look like the 'other' studios. :)

Christie has a degree in Graphic Design with a minor in photography. She adds another level of service to our studio that many others can't. Things look the way they should and are appealing to the eye. We choose to not use some choppy template that takes a minute to create and email as a proof. Of course it's quicker, and of course it cost less. But, is that really the way you want to present your image to the rest of the world. Is THAT the way you want to be remembered?

Let us take care of you, and show you the difference that you deserve when wrapping up your Senior year of High School.

Christie and I, both professional photographers, will be traveling to Kansas City this weekend to discuss the Wedding Photography market with some key individuals. We'll also be spending a lot of time with the infamous owners of Barbour Backdrops.

This winter we invested some money in one of Barbour's beautiful backdrops and lattice box sets. They work so well for our studio portraits and give a unique depth to our portraits. I could go on and on about how amazing they really are, but I would rather send you over to their website and their art speak for itself. Go Here: http://www.barbourbackdrops.com

We feel that education and vendor interaction is a huge part of our success. We listen to our clients and other vendors to find out exactly what our clients want. There are so many amazing photographers around the country, but there are not enough that actually listen to what their clients want. We strive to give our clients exactly what they expect and more.

I look forward to meeting with vendors at the HOA Professional Photographers convention in Kansas City and hope to make some great connections with some local Wedding venues in Kansas City.
